Friday Flyer - November 16, 2018
There will be no Friday Flyer next week; we'll pick it up again on November 30. Happy Thanksgiving!
Spotlight on the SUNY – University at Buffalo QuarkNet Center
Buffalo hosted a CMS masterclass in April, then held its 12th annual teacher meeting in August. Mentors Ia Iashvili, Avto Kharchilava and Salvatore Rappociio updated teachers on LHC Higgs boson measurements and on multi-messenger astronomy featuring data from neutrino and gravitational wave experiments. Other activities during the teacher meeting included the use of a cloud chamber, the collection of cosmic ray muon data, and a discussion of ways to improve preparations for future masterclasses at the center.
News from QuarkNet Central
Held yesterday, November 15, the third annual World Wide Data Day was a great success. With over 60 participating groups, it was nearly twice as big as in 2017 or 2016. The videooconferences went very well, thanks to the good work of the students, teachers and moderators. One of the participating teachers, Evagelia Bazouki of Serres, Greece, wrote that the W2D2 videoconference was "the worthiest 30 minutes since school started this year." To view the results, take a look at the "plots" tab in the shared spreadsheet.
The 7th annual International Cosmic Day is coming up on November 29. Follow this link to see how you and your students can be involved; there's even an option for those who don't have a detector!
It's now time to plan for International Masterclasses 2019. The Doodle registration polls are ready for mentors to choose dates and times for videoconferences. Fermilab will have videoconferences for CMS-WZH masterclasses, ATLAS-Z masterclasses, and brand-new MINERvA masterclasses for neutrino physics. Find all the polls and information in this IMC 2019 registration note.
Physics Experiment Roundup
After 40 years of service, CERN's Linac 2 has been shut down, making way for Linac 4 to be the first link in the LHC's chain of proton accelerators.
The three and a half week-long heavy-ion run recently began at CERN, marking the first time since 2015 that the LHC's experiments are recording collisions of lead nuclei.
Resources
CERN has a new website; you can read about it, or just check it out! Find out how neutrinos can be used to learn about the inner structure of Earth, or how gravitational lensing can be used as a tool to better understand the evolving universe.
Just for Fun
How can 1 liter of water burst a 50-liter glass barrel? Find out in the "Pascal's Blaising Barrel" video; just one of the 2018 winners in NSF's Vizzies competition. And lastly, check out symmetry's Physics Footage from a Monkee, where you'll see 1970s video recorded at Fermilab by musician Micky Donlenz.
